Toronto Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios may have suffered a setback in his recovery.
The right-hander is set to undergo an MRI on his elbow Tuesday after experiencing some discomfort following his last triple-A start, manager John Schneider told reporters ahead of first pitch.
"Just in talking to him, I think, you know, with his last couple outings, he's not really been where he wanted to be," Schneider said Tuesday. "Results are results, but I think just physically, he was a little bit more sore after his last outing."
Scheider added that the Blue Jays will know the results "in a day or so."
Berrios last started Sunday for the Buffalo Bisons but struggled, pitching just 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs — including a grand slam — in his fourth rehab outing.
It was his second straight subpar start for the Bisons after allowing five earned runs and a pair of homers last Tuesday.
Berríos began the season on the injured list with a stress fracture in his elbow. He was seemingly healthy entering spring training, but as he went through a physical in an attempt to join Team Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic, an MRI revealed elbow inflammation.
As the Blue Jays assess the next steps for Berrios, left-hander Eric Lauer will remain in the rotation.
The 30-year-old has pitched 31.1 innings for the Blue Jays this season, owning a 6.03 ERA with 22 strikeouts and 14 walks.
