The Toronto Blue Jays are switching things up for the first game of a key series against the Cleveland Guardians.
Right-hander Spencer Miles will open Tuesday's game (6:40 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT, Sportsnet and Sportsnet+), the team announced.
Spencer Arrighetti, who was originally scheduled to start the game, will likely follow Miles in a bulk role.
Miles, who was a Rule 5 draft selection by the Blue Jays, has pitched well in his rookie season. Over 83.1 innings of work with Toronto, the right-hander has pitched to a 2.92 ERA.
He's also been asked to take on a number of roles, including opener, bulk guy and, more recently, stepping into the high-leverage role left behind when Jeff Hoffman was traded to the Minnesota Twins.
Miles last served as an opener last week in a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals, where he pitched two scoreless innings before turning things over to the bullpen
Meanwhile, Arrighetti struggled over his brief stint with Toronto. In two appearances since being acquired from the Houston Astros in the Daulton Varsho trade, the 26-year-old right-hander has a 7.36 ERA over 7.1 innings of work.
The Blue Jays enter Tuesday's game 1.5 games back of the Guardians for the final wild-card spot in the American League.
