Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo received an automatic one-game suspension following Ryan Borucki’s ejection in Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, he confirmed Thursday.
Borucki threw a ball which struck the back of Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier in the eighth inning. The dugouts cleared following the incident and both Borucki and Peter Walker, the Blue Jays’ pitching coach, were ejected.
“I knew the moment my pitcher got thrown out, I’m suspended,” Montoyo told reporters, referencing a MLB rule that stipulates a manager will automatically be suspended if their pitcher is ejected. “It is what it is… I get suspended and we’ve got to move on.”
Further discipline for Borucki could still be announced by MLB. According to Sportsnet’s Arash Madani, Borucki will be given a “multiple-game suspension,” which he is expected to appeal.
The automatic nature of Montoyo’s suspension means it could not be appealed. He will serve his suspension tonight with Blue Jays coach John Schneider managing Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
The Blue Jays take on the Twins on Sportsnet/SN Now at 7:40 pm ET/4:40 pm PT.
