Hoping to bounce back after a crushing defeat on Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays will have to do so without a key player.
Outfielder Daulton Varsho is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles (Sportsnet, 3:07 p.m. ET / 12:07 p.m. PT) and is considered day-to-day with a left wrist issue, manager John Schneider told reporters ahead of first pitch.
Varsho suffered the injury in Friday's 13-3 loss to Baltimore, exiting the game in the fourth with what the team called left wrist discomfort.
He was shaking out his left hand during a pair of swings during his first-inning at-bat before grounding out. He initially stayed in the game defensively but was replaced by pinch-hitter Yohendrick Piñango when his turn in the batting order came up again in the fourth.
After the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Varsho began feeling soreness in his wrist on Thursday and that it "crept up on him a little bit as he was hitting against the machine" on Friday.
Varsho went for X-rays, which came back negative.
"It's just more inflammation in his wrist,” Schneider added. “Hopefully it's just a day or two. Just want to be careful.”
The 29-year-old Varsho owns a .256/.331/.408 slash line with five home runs after his lone trip to the plate against Baltimore.
Toronto is already without key position players Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk, who are currently working their way back from injuries of their own.
