Curtis Mead's tenure with the Boston Red Sox is off to an unfortunate start.
Mead was placed on the injured list on Tuesday after he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch in Monday's game against the Athletics, according to multiple reports.
Monday's game marked Mead's first with Boston after the team acquired him late Saturday night in a trade that sent left-hander Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals.
Mead struck out looking in the first at-bat of his Boston debut Monday night and was struck on the wrist by A's starter Jack Perkins in the fourth. Mead tried to shake off the pain, but left the game after being checked by an athletic trainer.
The 22-year-old infielder joined the Red Sox hitting .253 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs over 87 games with the Nationals this season.
With Mead headed to the injured list, the Red Sox are calling up Nick Sogard to the active roster.
Sogard has appeared in 12 games with Boston this season and is slashing .257/.350/.371 with two RBIs.
