The Toronto Blue Jays' pitching-injury luck appears to be rubbing off on their opponents.
Rangers right-hander Cal Quantrill left his start against the Blue Jays on Saturday after just 1.1 innings, reportedly due to right lat tightness.
Quantrill got George Springer to ground out on an 88 m.p.h. fastball — six m.p.h. lower than his season average of 94 — and was then visited by manager Skip Schumaker and the training staff before being removed.
The 31-year-old Canadian also left his previous start on Sunday with back tightness, but told reporters that he was fine and expected to make his next start.
He was relieved by former starter Jordan Montgomery.
Quantrill has enjoyed a resurgent season for the Rangers, pitching to a 2.86 ERA over 110 innings after logging a 6.04 ERA with the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves last season. He also has struck out 81 batters and walked 25.
The Port Hope, Ont. native has been particularly effective since the all-star break, recording a 1.80 ERA that ranks third in the American League.
The Rangers are currently 1.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final AL wild-card spot and are ahead of the Blue Jays by one game.
