The St. Louis Cardinals are giving Jordan Walker a chance to rest after a slow start in 2024.
The team optioned Walker to triple-A Wednesday amid the 22-year-old's struggles through 20 games.
Walker was MLB's Pipeline's No. 4 prospect entering the 2023 season, and despite beginning his career on a 12-game hit streak was also sent down last April. However, upon his return, Walker performed well to finish the year with a .276/.342/.445 slash line.
This year, those totals sit at .155/.239/.259 through 51 at-bats. To add to the ugly line, Walker has yet to homer and has struck out in just less than 27 per cent of his trips to the plate.
The Cardinals are off to a slow start themselves, with a 10-14 record and sitting last in the NL Central. Their offence has been one of the worst in baseball, scoring just 82 runs — the fifth-worst mark in MLB.
