Cubs' Alex Bregman returns to lineup for first time since suffering facial fracture

Though their spot in the playoffs is already clinched, a notable piece is back in the Chicago Cubs' lineup.

Star third baseman Alex Bregman is returning to the Cubs' lineup for the first time since suffering a facial fracture, the team announced ahead of their game against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

He will serve as the Cubs' designated hitter and bat third, with Matt Shaw occupying his everyday spot at third base.

Bregman suffered the injury in Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds after being hit in the face by a foul ball while in the on-deck circle in the fourth inning.

Prior to the injury, the 32-year-old had enjoyed a solid first year with the Cubs, slashing .262/.352/.452 with 26 home runs and 89 RBI.

Bregman joined the Cubs as a free agent in the off-season, leaving the Red Sox after a one-year stint at Fenway.

Over his 11-year MLB career split between the Houston Astros, Red Sox and Cubs, the Albuquerque, N.M., native has hit .271 with 235 home runs. He has three all-star selections to his name, along with a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award. He has also won two World Series while with the Astros.
