Another Canadian big-leaguer is headed for the injured list.
The New York Mets placed utilityman Jared Young on the 10-day IL Wednesday with a left meniscus tear.
In corresponding moves, the Mets recalled MJ Melendez from triple-A and released right-hander Luis Garcia.
Young, 30, is in his second season with New York and has gotten off to a hot start this season. Through his first 23 plate appearances, the left-handed hitter was slashing .350/.391/.450 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Prince George, B.C., native had been out of the Mets lineup since Saturday while dealing with what manager Carlos Mendoza called "knee discomfort."
Further testing revealed the tear, and according to The Athletic's Will Sammon, Young will undergo surgery in New York.
He will join fellow Canadians Nick Pivetta (elbow inflammation), Tyler O'Neill (concussion) and Rob Zastryzny (shoulder strain) on the major-league IL.
Young is in his fourth MLB season, having previously spent time in the majors with the Chicago Cubs. He has played in 55 career games and has four home runs and a .744 OPS.
He played for Team Canada at the 2023 and 2026 World Baseball Classics. In March's edition of the tournament, Young picked up one hit in six at-bats for Canada.
