The Toronto Blue Jays fell short of expectations in 2026, both in the standings and when it came to earning defensive recognition
Five Blue Jays were nominated for Gold Glove awards, but none were among the 20 winners the league announced Sunday night for the 2026 MLB season.
The Gold Glove award was first established in 1957 to recognize the league's best defensive player at each position.
The Boston Red Sox led all American League teams with three winners: Caleb Durbin (3B), Wilyer Abreu (RF), and Ceddanne Rafaela (CF).
The Arizona Diamondbacks matched the Red Sox and had the most National League winners: Geraldo Perdomo (SS), Gabriel Moreno (C), and Corbin Carroll (RF).
The Red Sox ranked sixth among MLB teams with a plus-24 Statcast fielding run value, and the Diamondbacks were fifth at plus-33.
The Blue Jays' five finalists — Vladimir Guerrero Jr., first base; Andres Gimenez, shortstop; Brandon Valenzuela, catcher; Jose Soriano, pitcher; Nathan Lukes, right field — tied with the Chicago Cubs for the most of any club. Toronto also finished second in MLB with a plus-45 fielding run value.
All 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team voted from a pool of players in their respective leagues, excluding players from their own team, to help determine winners at the nine standard defensive positions. Those votes accounted for 75 per cent of the selection, while the SABR defensive index counted for the other 25 per cent.
Meanwhile, for the utility position, a specialized defensive formula is used in collaboration with SABR — different from the traditional selection process.
