The Baltimore Orioles are down an outfielder after Tyler O'Neill suffered a concussion from what the team believes to be a fainting episode.
O'Neill was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Sunday after missing Baltimore's previous two games.
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz told reporters that O'Neill had been battling an illness throughout the last week. Dehydrated from the illness, he fainted on Thursday, which is when the team believes his hit his head.
O'Neill didn't initially hit the IL, however, as he was a late scratch on Friday and kept out of Baltimore's lineup on Saturday after feeling dizzy pre-game.
The 30-year-old Burnaby, B.C., native has played in 10 games for the Orioles this season and slashed .241/.353/.345 with one home run.
O'Neill entered the season after playing for Canada at the World Baseball Classic — his third time playing at the tournament. He recorded three hits and five walks over 23 plate appearances in Canada's five-game run to the quarterfinals.
In addition to O'Neill going on the IL, Baltimore first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is hitting the shelf with a broken fourth metatarsal bone in his left foot.
“It’s tough,” Albernaz said after Baltimore’s 6-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Albernaz did not offer a timetable for Mountcastle's return.
Mountcastle left Saturday’s game with left foot pain after stumbling running from first base to second on a double. The 29-year-old is hitting .286 with an RBI in eight games this season. He saw sporadic playing time with Pete Alonso as Baltimore's regular first baseman.
The Orioles currently sit tied atop the AL East with an 8-7 record.
