The Philadelphia Phillies acquired outfielder Cristian Pache from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor-league pitcher Billy Sullivan, the team announced Wednesday.
Pache, 24, is a solid defensive outfielder and was once a top prospect and was considered one of the centrepieces of the Matt Olson trade with the Atlanta Braves last season.
However, in his first year with the Athletics, Pache struggled, batting just .166 with three home runs in 91 games and was eventually demoted to triple-A.
Oakland manager Mark Kotsay had already announced that Pache would not break camp with the big league club and since he was out of minor-league options would have had to have been designated for assignment if he wasn't dealt.
Instead, the Athletics send him to Philadelphia for the 23-year-old Sullivan, who pitched in double-A last season.
Sullivan posted a 4.59 ERA, in 51 innings, striking out 32.1 per cent of the hitters he faced and walking 15 per cent during the 2022 season.
