With all-star week around the corner, Willson Contreras's status is suddenly up in the air.
The Boston Red Sox first baseman was ruled out of Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox with a left foot contusion after being replaced defensively in the bottom of the third.
Contreras fouled a ball off his foot in the top half of the inning and was visited by team trainers. He ultimately stayed in the game and flew out to centre, but pulled himself from the field with one out after going back to play defence.
The 34-year-old was 0-for-2 at the plate before exiting.
Contreras was named an all-star replacement for Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on Tuesday and announced that he would participate in the Home Run Derby on Wednesday.
Now a four-time all-star, Contreras entered play Wednesday with a .287/381/.545 slash line and 20 home runs in 87 games for the Red Sox.
Red Sox infielder Anthony Seigler also suffered an injury against Chicago in the third inning and was lifted with a right trap contusion.
