The Milwaukee Brewers are swinging a deal with one of their in-division rivals.
Milwaukee has acquired righty starter Dustin May and lefty reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Monday.
The return package for St. Louis was not initially reported.
May, 28, has had a solid first season in St. Louis, posting a 4.38 ERA and 1.284 WHIP across 21 starts. He has pitched 109 innings and has struck out 106, punctuated by a complete-game shutout on June 15 against the San Diego Padres — the first of his career.
Signed by the Cardinals as a free agent, May had previously spent the better part of the last seven years of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being drafted by the team in the third round in 2016. However, he was traded by L.A. to the Red Sox midway through the 2025 season.
A one-time World Series champ in 2020 — May missed the 2024 season and subsequent World Series run with injury — the Justin, Texas, native has a career 3.99 ERA with a 1.222 WHIP in 92 games (78 starts) in the major leagues.
Romero, meanwhile, has spent the better part of the last five seasons with the Cardinals. In 216 relief appearances with St. Louis, the 29-year-old has posted a 3.07 ERA and 1.201 WHIP with 207 strikeouts in 214 innings.
Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016, Romero has a career 3.51 ERA and 1.243 WHIP in 241 appearances.
