The Baltimore Orioles are implementing fresh leadership in hopes of a turnaround.
Jared Banner, the Chicago Cubs assistant general manager, was hired as Orioles GM, the team announced on Monday.
Banner, who has spent nearly two decades in MLB front offices, will work under president of baseball operations Mike Elias.
He spent the past six seasons with the Cubs after stints with the Boston Red Sox (11 years) and New York Mets (two years), helping build the NL Central club into a consistent threat.
"When I first heard Mike's vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of," Banner said in a statement. "The Orioles are a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase, a historic ballpark, and an organization full of talent. I look forward to building upon the foundation laid by Mike and his team to construct a world-class organization and bring Championships back to Baltimore."
Elias previously held the GM title in addition to president. The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde in May en route to a 79-82 season, missing the playoffs for the second straight year.
Baltimore has not won a post-season contest since the 2014 ALDS.
