The Boston Red Sox have traded veteran catcher Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros.

In return, the Red Sox receive prospect outfielders Emmanuel Valdez and Wilyer Abreu.

Vazquez, who turns 32 later this month, gives the Astros another strong bat and depth behind the plate as they look to hold off the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. He is hitting .282/.327/.432 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs in 84 games.

Vazquez will be a free agent after this season.

Earlier in the day, the Astros acquired slugger Trey Mancini from the Orioles. Houston is hosting Boston in a three-game series beginning Monday night.
