The Toronto Blue Jays' very busy trade deadline is now complete.
The Blue Jays will not trade designated hitter George Springer, as well as pitchers Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports.
The trio were expected to be moved, as all three players are on expiring contracts.
Toronto traded away its other expiring deals, with Kevin Gausman headed to the Cubs and Daulton Varsho sent to the Astros. Other notable players moved include: Jeff Hoffman, Adam Macko and highly-rated prospect Arjun Nimmala.
Springer, 36, is in the final year of a five-year deal he signed ahead of the 2021 season. He's slashing .239/.320/.411 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs this year.
"It was important for him to be here," Blue general manager Ross Atkins said of Springer after the deadline. "We wanted him here as we continue to push forward."
Scherzer, 42, has struggled in his second year in Toronto with a 7.92 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in eight starts. Bieber has made seven starts after missing a good chunk to begin the year; he has a 5.75 ERA and 1.63 WHIP.
