ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Gleyber Torres hit a leadoff homer, Wenceel Pérez and Riley Greene also went deep and the Detroit Tigers routed the Tampa Bay Rays 8-0 on Tuesday night.
Jack Flaherty (1-7) struck out six in five-plus innings for his first win since last September. Matt Vierling tripled, doubled and drove in two runs.
The Tigers, who hit five homers Monday to open the three-game set with a 10-9 victory, had lost eight consecutive series — their longest such streak since dropping nine straight in 2019. Detroit has won back-to-back games for the first time since May 2 and 3.
Detroit also won its first road series since taking two of three games at San Diego to begin the season. The team had gone nine road series in a row without winning one (0-8-1).
PHILLIES 3, PADRES 2
PHILADELPHIA — Bryce Harper hit his 377th career home run and Jhoan Duran struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his 13th save to lead Philadelphia to a win over San Diego.
Alec Bohm grounded into a double play against Jeremiah Estrada (2-2) in the sixth that brought home a run for the 3-2 lead.
The Phillies got some help in the eighth inning on a baserunning blunder by Fernando Tatis, on first base with two outs after his third hit of the game. Miguel Andujar hit a light chopper to third baseman Alec Bohm, who faked a throw to first and Tatis was tagged out in a rundown to end the inning.
Harper bailed out Phillies starter Aaron Nola when he connected in the fourth on a two-run shot that made it 2-2 off Padres starter Randy Vásquez over the 374 sign in left-center. Harper, who said he would be open to competing in the Home Run Derby this season in Philadelphia, if elected an All-Star, hit his 14th of the season.
Harper passed Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk on baseball’s career home run list. Up next, Matt Williams and Paul Goldschmidt with 378.
ORIOLES 4, RED SOX 2
BOSTON — Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer and Shane Baz pitched seven solid innings as Baltimore beat Boston.
Coby Mayo also homered for Baltimore, which won its third straight and ended a three-game road skid.
Baz (3-5) pitched seven innings for a second straight start, allowing four hits and striking out six as he picked up consecutive wins for the first time this season. After giving up a leadoff triple to Jarren Duran in the first, Baz held Boston without another hit until the fifth and had a stretch of retiring 10 straight batters.
Rico Garcia struck out two in the ninth for his fourth save.
MARLINS 7, NATIONALS 3
WASHINGTON — Joe Mack, Heriberto Hernández and Canada's Otto Lopez hit successive home runs in the fifth inning to power Miami past Washington.
Hernández added a two-run shot in the ninth for the Marlins, who didn’t give up a hit until Drew Millas singled leading off the sixth against Ryan Gusto, the third Miami pitcher.
Luis García Jr. had an RBI groundout later in the inning and Washington scored twice in the seventh to cut it to 4-3. But the Marlins tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth when Mack drove in his third run of the night with a sacrifice bunt and Hernández connected off Mitchell Parker for his third home run in two games.
Mack’s two-run shot to centre field off Miles Mikolas (1-5) in the fifth was the first home run of his career. Hernández went deep four pitches later, and Lopez followed with a longball of his own.
It was the third time in Marlins history they hit back-to-back-to-back home runs and the first since August 2023 in a 5-1 win over the Astros.
REDS 4, ROYALS 3, 10 INNINGS
CINCINNATI — Blake Dunn hit a single in the 10th inning to drive in automatic runner Spencer Steer and give Cincinnati a win over Kansas.
Steer homered twice and Will Benson hit a tying solo shot in the ninth for the Reds, who only had four hits in the game.
The Royals led 3-2 when pinch-hitter Benson homered off Royals closer Lucas Erceg.
The Royals had runners on first and third with one out in the 10th, but Jac Caglianone lined out to short and Brock Burke (2-2) struck out Kyle Isbel to end the threat.
Royals left-hander Noah Cameron allowed one hit — Steer’s solo home run in the fifth — and struck out eight with no walks in seven innings.
Kansas City had lost eight of Cameron’s 10 starts this season but he was dominant on Tuesday, tying career highs with seven innings pitched and eight strikeouts.
BRAVES 4, BLUE JAYS 3
ATLANTA — Matt Olson hit a tiebreaking homer, Bryce Elder bounced back from his worst start of the season and Atlanta defeated Toronto.
Olson’s towering shot barely cleared the right-field wall, snapping a 3-all deadlock in the sixth inning. It was his 17th homer of the season.
Elder (5-3) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. It was a big improvement over his last appearance, when he was rocked for nine hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings of an 8-0 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Kazuma Okamoto hit a two-run homer for Toronto.
Kevin Gausman and the Blue Jays kept Ronald Acuña Jr. in the park after the Atlanta slugger hit five homers over the four previous games. But Olson’s longball pushed baseball’s best record to 41-20.
Gausman (4-4) took the loss despite another deep start. He surrendered five hits and four runs with eight strikeouts in six innings — the 12th time in 13 starts that he’s lasted at least five.
TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 4
MINNEAPOLIS — Luke Keaschall and Tristan Gray drove in two runs apiece in a bottom-of-the-order attack, and Minnesota beat Chicago to deliver right-hander Davis Martin a rare loss.
Keaschall, Gray and Alex Jackson — batting seventh, eighth and ninth — each had two hits off Martin (8-2), who lasted 4 2/3 innings in his shortest of 12 starts this season. The 29-year-old allowed six runs on a career-most 10 hits and three walks, after entering the night ranked sixth in the majors with a 2.00 ERA.
Gray, who hit a grand slam in Minnesota’s 9-6 win on Monday, had a two-run single in a four-run fourth against Martin, who had allowed one or no runs in seven of his last eight turns. Brooks Lee, who has 11 RBIs in his last 11 games, got the Twins on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third inning after they fell behind 3-0.
Connor Prielipp (2-3) pitched into the seventh to match his longest start as a pro, as the Twins carefully manage the workload of one of their top prospects with his history of elbow injuries. The left-hander had seven strikeouts, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over a career-high 94 pitches.
Twins relievers had seven more strikeouts over the final three innings, as Yoendrys Gómez got the last four outs for his fourth save.
BREWERS 8, GIANTS 3
MILWAUKEE — Kyle Harrison matched his season high with 12 strikeouts, Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer and Milwaukee beat San Francisco.
Harrison (7-1) allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings, improving to 6-0 in his last seven starts. He fanned at least 10 batters for the fifth time in his career and third this season as the NL Central-leading Brewers moved a season-high 16 games over .500.
Harrison received a standing ovation as he left the field after throwing 106 pitches. Alan Ashby struck out Buddy Kennedy to end the sixth.
Bauers connected off Trevor McDonald (2-3) in the first inning for his team-leading 10th homer after Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio walked.
Willy Adames’ solo shot in the sixth snapped Harrison’s scoreless streak at 23 innings.
RANGERS 7, CARDINALS 4
ST. LOUIS — Joc Pederson hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and Texas beat St. Louis for their season-best fifth straight victory.
Pederson went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Josh Jung also drove in two runs and Kyle Higashioka had three hits for Texas.
Evan Carter drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, moved to second on a wild pitch by Riley O’Brien (3-3) and third when Higashioka singled. Pederson and Jung followed with RBI singles before Pederson scored on Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice fly to make it 7-4.
The Cardinals are 2-9 in the regular season against Texas in St. Louis.
Canada's Cal Quantrill (3-0) entered with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth and needed just one pitch to retire Iván Herrera. Jakob Junis pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
ATHLETICS 2, CUBS 1
CHICAGO — Gage Jump pitched seven effective innings in his first major league win, and the Athletics beat Chicago.
Nick Kurtz homered for the A’s, who had lost seven of nine. Zack Gelof also drove in a run.
Jump (1-1) allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one in his second career start. The left-hander, a second-round pick in the 2024 amateur draft, was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas when Aaron Civale went on the 15-day injured list last week.
Chicago dropped to 5-17 in its last 22 games. It wasted a solid performance by Canadian national team pitcher Jameson Taillon (2-5), who surrendered two runs in 6 1/3 innings after going 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA in his previous three starts.
The Cubs threatened in the ninth against Scott Barlow, putting two runners on with no outs. But Alex Bregman struck out swinging and Seiya Suzuki flied out before Hogan Harris retired Ian Happ on a flyball to center for his fifth save.
PIRATES 10, ASTROS 6
HOUSTON — Oneil Cruz and Brandon Lowe hit three-run homers and Endy Rodríguez added a two-run shot to power Pittsburgh to a win over Houston.
Jake Mangum tied a career-high with four hits to help the Pirates to their fourth straight victory.
Yordan Alvarez had three RBIs and hit his 21st home run, which ranks second in the majors behind Kyle Schwarber’s 22. But his big game wasn’t enough to keep the Astros from their third loss in four games.
The Pirates trailed by 2 with no outs and two on in the sixth before Cruz launched his 14th homer of the season into the bullpen in right-center field to give them a 5-4 lead.
Lowe’s home run, which clanged off the foul pole in right field, came in the eighth to make it 9-4.
Pittsburgh starter Bubba Chandler (2-6) allowed five hits and four runs — three earned — in five innings.
Houston added two runs in the ninth to cut the lead to 4 before loading the bases with one out off Dennis Santana. Gregory Soto took over and struck out the next two batters for his eighth save.
ROCKIES 8, ANGELS 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. — TJ Rumfield got a gift when his long flyball bounced off Jo Adell’s head for a most unusual home run, and Colorado defeated Los Angeles.
Willi Castro hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Hunter Goodman had a solo shot in the second. Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4) allowed two runs in five innings for the win.
Castro and Rumfield hit back-to-back homers in the fourth off starter Grayson Rodriguez (2-2), who gave up eight runs, eight hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings.
With the Rockies holding a 7-0 lead, Rumfield sent a flyball to deep right-center, where the ball grazed the outside of Adell’s glove before hitting his head and bounding over the wall.
There was brief confusion on the field when the ball caromed back into the outfield. Rumfield stopped at second base, initially unsure of the ruling, before proceeding around the bases.
MARINERS 8, METS 3
SEATTLE — Patrick Wisdom hit his first home run this season, Jhonny Pereda went deep for the second time in the major leagues and Seattle beat New York for their season-high eighth straight victory.
The Mariners (33-29) improved to a season-best four games over .500 on the strength of another stellar offensive performance. Seattle smacked three home runs, increasing its total to 21 during a winning streak that is the team’s longest since rattling off eight consecutive victories in September last season.
Wisdom got the Mariners on the board in the second inning with a two-run shot off Mets opener Huascar Brazobán. It was Wisdom’s first home run since Sept. 21, 2024, with the Chicago Cubs.
New York tied it in the third on a two-run homer by rookie Carson Benge, who added a solo shot off Logan Gilbert (4-4) in the sixth. It was the first multi-homer game of Benge’s major league career.
Gilbert allowed three runs and struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings.
Seattle supplied the rest of the offense. Julio Rodríguez, who homered in the sixth, lofted a sacrifice fly in the fourth off Canada's Jonah Tong (1-1) to score Wisdom.
DODGERS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 5
PHOENIX — Shohei Ohtani had a double, triple and two RBIs to stay hot at the plate, Freddie Freeman smacked a two-run homer and Los Angeles held on late to beat Arizona.
Ohtani — a four-time MVP — is 12 for 26 (.462) over his last six games, including two doubles, a triple and two homers.
The Dodgers jumped ahead 2-0 in the first when Freeman launched his ninth homer of the season into the right-field seats, scoring Ohtani, who led off the game with a double down the right-field line. It was part of Freeman’s three-hit night.
Ohtani was part of another offensive surge in the second, delivering a two-run triple to right that made it 4-0.
Andy Pages added a sacrifice fly and Mookie Betts had an RBI single in the seventh to push L.A.’s advantage to 6-2.
In the seventh, Nolan Arenado’s two-run double cut the deficit to 6-4 and Pavin Smith walked with the bases loaded to make it 6-5. Will Klein coaxed a groundout from rookie Tommy Troy to end the threat.
Tanner Scott handled the ninth, working around a one-out single from Ildemaro Vargas, to earn his sixth save in seven chances.
