B.C.’s Kajan Johnson extended his winning streak to four in a row Saturday at a UFC Fight Night event in London, England with a split decision victory over former training partner Stevie Ray.
Johnson and Ray each landed 37 total strikes in the three-round lightweight bout, however the Canadian landed nine more significant strikes than Scotland’s Ray and was more efficient, connecting on 61 per cent of his shots compared to Ray’s 39 per cent.
Johnson improved to 23–12–1 in mixed martial arts thanks to the win, which was his third straight over a southpaw opponent.
“That could’ve been a draw and I would’ve been happy,” Johnson told UFC commentator Dan Hardy in the cage following the fight. “If he would’ve won I wouldn’t have been surprised. It just depends on how you score the second round, really.”
It was pro-Ray crowd at The O2 Arena, so when Johnson’s hand was raised the boo birds began to chirp and Johnson didn’t appreciate it one bit.
“Guys, that was an amazing fight. You guys have no reason to be booing right now,” Johnson said. “We’re two of the best martial artists in the world competing and bleeding for you. We deserve nothing but your respect. Anything less is disgraceful. You should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Johnson and Ray had previously trained together at the Tristar Gym in Montreal.
