Former UFC champ Griffin retires from MMA

Forrest Griffin hasn't fought since July last year.

Former light-heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin is retiring from mixed martial arts.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement at the UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Bigfoot 2 post-fight press conference Saturday night. White added that Griffin will remain with the organization in some capacity.

Griffin suffered a MCL tear and ACL strain while training for his UFC 155 fight against Phil Davis. He last fought at UFC 148 in July 2012, defeating Tito Ortiz by unanimous decision.

The 33-year-old Griffin was a onetime UFC light-heavyweight champion after defeating Quinton (Rampage) Jackson by unanimous decision in a memorable five-round bout at UFC 86 in July 2008. He lost the title months later in a fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 92.

Griffin’s UFC career took off in 2005 after he defeated Stephan Bonnar in an epic fight to win the first season of The Ultimate Fighter.
