Jessica Eye will be looking to strengthen her position as the No. 1 contender in the UFC women’s flyweight division when she takes on Cynthia Calvillo on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 172 as a narrow -120 favourite on the UFC odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The 33-year-old American has maintained her ranking after claiming victory in four of five fights ahead of Saturday night’s bout at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
Eye’s recent run of success comes on the heels of a dismal four-fight losing streak, with each of those defeats coming by decision. But while Eye’s rebound coincides with her return to the UFC women’s flyweight division after spending five years fighting at bantamweight, two of her recent victories came by narrow split decisions.
Eye came up short in her bid for the UFC women’s flyweight title at UFC 238, suffering a second-round KO loss to Valentina Shevchenko as a +750 underdog at sports betting sites. In addition, she failed to make weight in her last outing, a 131-pound catchweight matchup with Viviane Araújo at UFC 245 that she won by unanimous decision to pay out on +180 odds.
Currently listed as the No. 10 contender in the UFC women’s strawweight division, Calvillo is set as a -110 underdog for Saturday night as she makes her first appearance as a flyweight since joining the UFC in 2017.
The 32-year-old native of San Jose, Calif., makes the move to flyweight after missing weight in two of her past three flyweight fights, including her last outing, a three-round clash with Marina Rodriguez that ended in a majority draw. And like Eye, Calvillo has regularly seen fights go the distance, with four of her past five bouts getting decided by the judges. That run includes her lone defeat as a pro, a three-round unanimous decision loss to Carla Esparza at UFC 219 as -225 chalk.
Elsewhere on the UFC Fight Night odds for this weekend, Marvin Vettori takes on Karl Roberson as -225 chalk. These two middleweights were supposed to face off last month at UFC Fight Night 171, but the fight was postponed after Roberson withdrew following the weigh-in due to concerns over COVID-19.
Roberson’s decision not to fight sparked a physical altercation in a hotel lobby, with that bad blood expected to spill over into Saturday’s clash. Both these fighters ride two-fight win streaks, and Roberson lags as a +175 underdog despite claiming a submission win over Roman Kopylov in his last outing at UFC Moscow.
In bantamweight action, Merab Dvalishvili battles Ray Borg as a -400 favourite, while featherweight Andre Fili takes on Charles Jourdain as a -230 wager.
