Ringside: Goulet earns quick TKO in Quebec

Victoriaville, Que.’s Jonathan Goulet won his first fight since being released by the UFC, knocking out Matt MacGrath of Halifax in the main event of Ringside MMA 8: Invasion Saturday night in Beauport, Que.

In the Montreal-based organization’s first time holding an event near the province’s capital of Quebec City, Goulet made his local fans proud and returned to the winning circle after two straight losses in the UFC. The Road Warrior managed to stop his East Coast opponent with strikes a mere 1:39 into the first round, much to delight of the crowd at the Gilles-Tremblay Arena.

In the co-main event, Guillaume Lamarche defeated Tristan Johnson by TKO at 2:36 of the opening frame.

NOTES: Goulet’s training partner Martin (The Stress) Desilets will make his first defence of his light-heavyweight title in The Fight Club on Sept. 10 against former UFC fighter Victor (The Matrix) Valimaki in the main event of TFC 11: Full Force. Desilets defeated the hometown favourite for the vacant championship in March. Also featured on the card at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, local fighter Mitch Clarke will battle Red Deer, Alta.’s Josh Machan for the TFC Canadian lightweight belt, while the latter’s brother Ryan Machan will move up from lightweight to take on James McCutcheon in a welterweight bout.
