USA Basketball will be without Bradley Beal at the Tokyo Games after the federation placed the Washington Wizards guard in health and safety protocols and announced he would be unable to participate in the Olympic tournament.

Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant was also placed in health and safety protocols in an abundance of caution. It is unclear if Grant will be allowed to participate in the Olympics.

The U.S. team has been training in Las Vegas in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics. Both Beal and Grant have participated in the team's three exhibition games—a win over Argentina on Tuesday and losses to Nigeria and Australia earlier in the week.

The Tokyo Games are set to start on July 23. Japan's safety protocols for the Olympics include the provision that all athletes and coaches must test negative for COVID-19 72 hours before their departure to the country and take another test when they arrive.

Beal averaged 31.3 points, 4.4 assists and 4.7 rebounds on 48.5 per cent shooting last regular season with the Wizards, earning an all-star nod in the process.
