Jeremy Lin will not be joining the Golden State Warriors organization after a deal could not be completed before Saturday’s 11 p.m. ET waiver deadline, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Marc Stein of The New York Times.
The Warriors intended to sign and immediately waive Lin so he could join the G-League’s Santa Cruz Warriors to start the season. However, while the terms of the deal were agreed to, the contract could not be completed without an international letter of clearance due to the fact that Lin played in China last season.
Lin is still technically eligible to sign with the Warriors, with an international letter of clearance, but due to the fact that the waiver deadline has passed, he would first have to join the Warriors’ NBA roster before being assigned to the G-League. With the Warriors already at a full 17-man roster, this move would require another player to be cut and could have cap implications, too.
As a result, both Stein and Charania report that the Warriors instead signed undrafted small forward Elijah Pemberton and placed him on waivers before Saturday’s deadline. Pemberton, 23, was a senior at Hofstra last season.
Lin, 32, last played in the NBA in 2018-19 as a member of the Toronto Raptors team that defeated the Warriors in the NBA Final. He appeared in 29 games with the Warriors as a rookie in 2010-11 and has appeared in 480 games over his NBA career.
