Cole Kmet's season could be over.
The Chicago Bears placed the tight end on injured reserve with what head coach Ben Johnson called a "serious" knee injury on Friday.
"He's a big part of our heartbeat. It stinks. I hate it," Johnson told reporters.
Kmet sustained the injury during Thursday's win over the New England Patriots on a reception late in the fourth quarter and was carted off the field.
The 27-year-old tight end had just 10 catches for 87 yards and one touchdown in seven games before going down with injury.
Once the Bears' top tight end, Kmet slid to second string with the emergence of sophomore Colston Loveland.
Chicago (5-2) is off until next Monday when it visits the reigning-champion Seattle Seahawks.
