The Boston Bruins continue to move assets ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.
Boston has traded veteran forward Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports. Centre Casey Mittelstadt is going back to Boston in a trade featuring two American players.
The Avs also get a fifth-round pick in 2026, while the Bruins get a second-round pick in 2025 and prospect winger Will Zellers.
Coyle is in the fifth season of a six-year contract with a $5.25-million cap hit.
He has 22 points (15 goals and seven assists) in 64 games this season.
Coyle was drafted in the first round, 28th overall, by the San Jose Sharks in 2010 but never played a game for the club. He was traded to the Minnesota Wild in June 2011 as part of the deal that sent offensive defenceman Brent Burns to San Jose. He was then shipped up to Boston leading up to the trade deadline in February 2019.
The 33-year-old from East Weymouth, Mass., has 472 points (187 goals and 285 assists) in 931 career games over 13 seasons with the Wild and Bruins.
Boston (28-28-8) is still in the playoff hunt, three points out of a wild-card spot, but has been a seller at the deadline, sending Max Jones and Trent Frederic to Edmonton and Justin Brazeau to Minnesota on Thursday.
Mittelstadt has two years left on his contract with an average annual value of $5.75 million.
Picked eighth overall by the Sabres in the 2017 NHL Draft, Mittelstadt has 11 goals and 23 assists in 63 games this season.
It’s not exactly what the Avs were looking for after Mittelstadt had nine points (three goals, six assists) in 11 playoff games last season, the Minnesota native’s first appearance in the post-season.
The Avs currently hold the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
