The Pittsburgh Penguins are adding a familiar face to the blue line.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was first to report that the Penguins are acquiring defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph from the Blues.
The return in the trade is future considerations.
Joseph, 25, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Penguins but was a free agent this summer after not receiving a qualifying offer. He signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Blues in free agency and has played in 23 games this season.
The Blues had a surplus on defence after acquiring Cam Fowler from the Ducks and as Nick Leddy nears return from a lower-body injury. The Penguins, on the other hand, had a need for an experienced defenceman after Marcus Pettersson suffered a lower-body injury that will keep him out week-to-week.
Joseph has appeared in 170 NHL games, collecting eight goals and 39 points.
Joesph's brother Mathieu was traded to the Blues this summer, making the two briefly teammates before Wednesday's trade with the Penguins.
