The Calgary Flames are getting some rookie reinforcement on offence.
Prospect Rory Kerins has been called up from the AHL-affiliated Calgary Wranglers ahead of the Flames' game against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, the team announced Friday.
The 22-year-old Caledon, Ont., native was drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 draft and is in the midst of a breakout season in the AHL, leading the league with 21 goals and sitting second in points with 34 in 34 games.
In a corresponding move, the Flames placed forward Connor Zary on the injured reserve. Zary sustained a lower-body injury in the team's overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks on Jan. 7. While there is no set timeline for his return, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reported that there is no damage to the 23-year-old's MCL or ACL in his left knee after initial imaging.
Kerins was seen at Flames practice on Friday wearing No. 86 on his jersey, but where he will slot into the team's lineup remains unclear in his potential debut against the Kings.
