Canada's blue line will have to close out Wednesday's game while shorthanded.
Defenceman Shea Theodore exited in the second period of the opening game against Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off after suffering an apparent upper-body injury.
He was ruled out for the remainder of the game at the start of the third period.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, after exiting the game, Theodore went to get extra examinations on his right hand and wrist area.
The injury occurred early in the second period after he took a hit from Swedish forward Adrian Kempe. The Vegas Golden Knights defenceman appeared to jam his shoulder into the boards on the hit and was seen clutching the area as he hobbled off the ice.
Canada's medical staff attended to him on the bench before he eventually skated across the ice back to the team's locker room.
He played 6:59 across nine shifts before exiting.
Theodore was chosen to man Canada's bottom pairing alongside veteran blue-line presence Drew Doughty.
The 29-year-old has been an effective presence with the Golden Knights this season, tallying seven goals and a career-high 41 assists for 48 points in 55 games.
Canada brought a seventh defender to the tournament in Philadelphia Flyers blueliner Travis Sanheim, who was a healthy scratch against Sweden.
Canada will not be able to add a replacement to the roster if Theodore is ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. Tournament rules dictate teams can only add more players if injuries deplete the roster below 18 skaters.
