The Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals won't be able to roll out their 1-2 goaltending tandem for at least the next week.
The Caps placed Charlie Lindgren on injured reserve on Saturday and recalled fellow netminder Hunter Shepard from AHL Hershey.
After a collision with Montreal Canadiens forward Nick Suzuki on Friday, Lindgren was knocked to the ice and suffered an upper-body injury.
Suzuki was chasing his rebound after a shot Friday when Capitals right wing Brandon Duhaime pushed him into Lindgren, causing both of them to fall.
Lindgren continued in net until the next media timeout where he was replaced by Logan Thompson. The team ruled him out for the game in the second period.
Lindgren and Thompson both have started 21 games for the Capitals this season.
Lindgren's numbers are a bit worse, but still quite respectable (10-8-2, 2.65 GAA, .901 save percentage).
Shepard, 29, is 15-7-1 with a 2.68 GAA and .898 save percentage for Hershey this season. His lone NHL action came last season when he played four games for the Capitals.
The Capitals are in Nashville on Saturday to face the Predators.
