The architect of the Dallas Stars is sticking around.
General manager Jim Nill agreed to a two-year contract extension with the club, it announced on Tuesday.
"I’m fortunate to work with incredibly talented and passionate individuals that have helped our franchise become one of the best in the NHL," Nill said in a statement.
"I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to continue as general manager of the Stars. My family and I would like to thank (Stars owner) Tom Gaglardi for his continued support as we look to bring the Stanley Cup back to Dallas."
The 67-year-old Nill, of Hanna, Alta., has been GM of the Stars since April 2013. He has won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award in each of the last three seasons.
Under Nill's watch, the Stars have made the playoffs in eight of the 12 seasons, including a current streak of three straight conference finals and a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2020.
Over the past three seasons, Dallas's 29 playoff wins trail only the Florida Panthers (45) and Edmonton Oilers (35).
In a statement, Gaglardi called Nill "one of the most respected" GMs in the league.
"Through his roster management and talent evaluation, he has positioned our franchise to be amongst the best teams in our league in both the present and future. I’m thrilled that he will continue to guide the Stars," Gaglardi said.
Notable players that Nill drafted or traded for during his Stars tenure include Tyler Seguin, Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen.
The Stars (44-18-12) currently sit second in the tough Central Division with 100 points in 74 games. They trail only division rival Colorado Avalanche in the overall league standings.
