The New Jersey Devils will be without their captain for a little while.
Centre Nico Hischier has been placed on injury reserve retroactive to Jan. 25 after experiencing the receiving end of a Nick Suzuki cross-check, the team announced Thursday.
The injury is undisclosed and a timeline for his return hasn't been released.
Hischier started in 29 of the 51 games he's played this season, scoring 24 goals and 19 assists. He ranks first in goal production among other centres on the Devils.
In Hischier's place, Simon Nemec has been recalled from the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League.
Nemec has five goals with 22 points in 32 games this season. He also appeared in the AHL All-Star Challenge on Monday.
With the addition of this young defender the New Jersey Devils are back on track with three lines of healthy defencemen after Jonas Siegenthaler suffered an injury against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Head coach Sheldon Keefe said he expects Siegenthaler to miss some time.
