Fans won't need to show proof of vaccination to get in to the Heritage Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ont., on March 13, the league announced on Thursday.
The change comes in the wake of the province of Ontario easing certain COVID-19 restrictions earlier this week. Previously, fans were expected to show a vaccination card or passport in order to gain admission to the game.
However, masks will be still required when fans are in indoor areas, such as restrooms and are recommended for fans while seated unless they are eating or drinking.
The Maple Leafs – taking the ice as the "Arenas," a tribute to the franchise's nickname from 1917-19 – are scheduled to face off against the Sabres at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
The outdoor showcase at the home of the CFL’s Tiger-Cats returns to the league’s regular-season schedule after games in 2019 in Regina, 2016 in Winnipeg, 2014 in Vancouver, 2011 in Calgary, and 2003 in Edmonton.
The Leafs-Sabres matchup will be the NHL’s 35th outdoor game, and the third this season. Toronto will play its fourth outdoor game, while Buffalo makes its third appearance. The temperature in Hamilton on March 13, 2021, reached a high of 5 C.
The game will be broadcast on Sportsnet and SN Now at 3 p.m. ET.
