The Calgary Flames became the first team to take a player from the USHL (excluding the U.S. National Team Development Program) at the NHL Draft on Friday.
The Flames selected Youngstown Phantoms centre Jack Hextall 30th overall in the first round.
Hextall had 20 goals and 38 assists in 59 games for Youngstown last season.
The Illinois native also helped the U.S. win the Hlinka Gretzky Cup under-18 tournament last summer.
Hextall has committed to play NCAA hockey at Michigan State.
Hextall's dad is a cousin of former NHL goalie and GM Ron Hextall.
Earlier in the draft, the Flames selected Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels sixth overall.
