Calgary Flames defenceman Christopher Tanev is hoping to get clearance to return from a shoulder injury and join the team early in the upcoming training camp, he told Sportsnet's Eric Francis.

Tanev underwent surgery in June after sustaining a dislocated shoulder during Game 6 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against the Dallas Stars. He was expected to be out 4-6 months.

Despite the injury, Tanev played through pain during the Battle of Alberta series against the Edmonton Oilers, suiting up for Game 5.

The 32-year-old veteran blueliner had six goals and 28 points during the regular season plus one assist in eight playoff games.

After adding MacKenzie Weegar this off-season, the Flames are widely regarded as having one of the strongest defence groups in the NHL for the upcoming season.
