John Gibson's debut for the Detroit Red Wings was less than ideal.
The veteran netminder was pulled from his start on Thursday in the Red Wings' season opener against the Montreal Canadiens late in the second period after allowing five goals on 13 shots.
He was replaced in net by backup Cam Talbot.
Gibson, 32, was acquired by the Red Wings in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks on June 28, which saw goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2026 fourth-rounder and 2027 second-rounder sent the other way.
The Pittsburgh native has two seasons remaining on an eight-year contract that carries a $6.4 million cap hit.
Gibson had previously spent his entire career with the Ducks, who drafted him 39th overall in 2011.
Across 506 career games, Gibson has a 204-217-63 record, 2.89 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.
In 2024-25, he posted a 2.77 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage over 29 appearances (28 of them starts).
