Veteran defenceman Alex Pietrangelo has been shut down for the season.
The Vegas Golden Knights announced Pietrangelo will not play in 2025-26 when they submitted their opening-night roster, a decision that was approved by Pietrangelo, the league and the NHLPA.
The Golden Knights will be eligible for full relief on his $8.8 million cap hit.
The 35-year-old announced he was taking a step back from hockey in the off-season to focus on his health as he deals with a long-term hip injury. But he then told Vegas media in September that he was responding well to rehab and was not closing the door on playing again this season.
“Nothing’s really concrete," Pietrangelo said at the time. "I’m going to take it day by day and go through my process and see where it goes.”
Drafted fourth overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2018, the King City, Ont., native has 148 goals and 637 points in 1,087 career games between the Blues and Golden Knights.
He won the Stanley Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023, and also claimed a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
