Golden Knights' Robin Lehner to undergo surgery to 'clean up' shoulder

Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon explained why the team will stick with the tandem of Robin Lehner and Marc-Andre Fleury for the upcoming NHL season.

Vegas Golden Knights star goalie Robin Lehner is slated to undergo surgery this week to "clean up" his shoulder, general manager Kelly McCrimmon told reporters Monday.

He is expected to be ready for the start of the team's training camp ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Earlier this month, the Golden Knights signed the 29-year-old to a five-year, $25-million contract. Lehner, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent, led Vegas to the Western Conference Final with a .917 save percentage and four shutouts in 16 playoff starts this summer. The six-foot-four, 240-pound netminder was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline, and finished the season with a 19-10-5 record, .920 SVV% and 2.89 GAA.

After spending the first five years of his career in Ottawa — which selected him in the second round of the 2009 draft — and three years in Buffalo, where he was not tendered a contract in the 2018 off-season, Lehner has come into his own the past two seasons. That started with a resurgent 2018-19, in which he captured the Masterton and Jennings trophies after posting a sterling .930 SVV% and 2.13 GAA.

Over the course of his 10-year career, he has compiled a 116-120-45 record with a .918 SVV% and 2.72 GAA.
