Despite his career-worst season, the Nashville Predators are aiming to lock goaltender Juuse Saros down on a new contract this off-season.
Saros, 29, has one year remaining on a four-year, $20 million contract and becomes eligible to sign a contract extension come July 1. According to Predators general manager Barry Trotz, the team plans on extending him.
"We’ll be in talks," Trotz told reporters Tuesday. "I’m sure it’s not going to be a July 1 announcement, probably. I think it’s going to be a process with his people, his representatives. But I do know this: (Saros) wants to be here, and he’s been a big part of (the team). I’d like him to be here, so we’re going to work hard at getting something done with him."
The goaltender, who posted career lows in goals-against average (2.86) and save percentage (.906) this season, echoed the same sentiment as Trotz when it came to wanting to remain in Nashville.
"It’s a great city," Saros said. "We have unbelievable fans, and I think as an organization we took a good step this year, too. I believe in this organization, so obviously I would be happy to (sign)."
Drafted by the Predators in 2013, Saros has a 182-119-32 career record, along with a 2.63 GAA, .917 save percentage and 23 shutouts over 350 games.
He was the subject of trade rumours this season approaching the trade deadline, and the speculation has already trickled into the off-season following Nashville's first-round exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Finn played all six games against the Vancouver Canucks in Round 1, recording two wins, a 2.02 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage.
"He's all fight. He's all competitive fight. He's awesome," said head coach Andrew Brunette after the Predators were eliminated. "The saves he made in the last two games ... I think speaks volumes to his commitment to be great."
