The Detroit Red Wings didn't want to be left out of the first round of Friday's NHL Draft.
Detroit traded goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd-overall pick on Friday, the teams announced.
The Red Wings used the pick to select Kamloops Blazers forward J.P. Hurlbert. The 18-year-old forward had 42 goals and 55 assists in 68 games for the Blazers last season. He is headed to the University of Michigan next season.
Cossa, 23, heads back to the Mammoth in the deal after a solid year in the AHL.
The Hamilton, Ont., native had a 26-8-4 record with a 2.33 goals-against average and .915 save percentage over 39 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
He has made one NHL appearance since being drafted in the first round, 15th overall, in 2021.
The Mammoth acquired pick No. 23 earlier on Friday in a trade with the Bruins that saw JJ Peterka go to Boston.
