The Ottawa Senators officially cut ties last month with Alex Formenton, according to a report Thursday by Postmedia.
Formenton was one of five players accused of a 2018 sexual assault who were acquitted during a two-month trial in London, Ont., that ended in June 2025.
Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch reported that Senators recorded the move on May 8 with the NHL's Central Registry office, effectively making Formenton an unrestricted free agent.
Senators GM Steve Staios said on Sept. 17 that Formenton would not be returning to the organization despite the team still owning his rights as a restricted free agent. He said at the time that the decision was through an agreement with Formenton's agent and the Senators, and the team would gauge the market for a trade.
The Senators technically still held Formenton's rights because he reportedly did not sign a qualifying offer in July 2022. Because of that decision, he was the only one of the five players who was still a restricted free agent.
Formenton hasn't played in the NHL since 2021-22, playing with HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss league since then.
