The rebuilding San Jose Sharks have traded veteran defenceman Brent Burns and forward Lane Pederson to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Steven Lorentz, goaltender Eetu Makiniemi and a 2023 third-round pick.
The Sharks are retaining 33 per cent of Burns's $8-million cap hit over the next three seasons.
Burns had a modified no-trade clause in which he was able to accept a trade to only three teams. Carolina was not initially on Burns's trade list, but he ultimately agreed to the deal.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier told reporters on Monday that he would let Burns "lead the way" on trade discussions.
The 37-year-old Burns has three years remaining on an eight-year, $64 million contract.
Burns was the Norris Trophy winner as the league's top defenceman in 2017 and is a six-time NHL all-star.
Burns had 10 goals and 44 assists in 82 games last season.
The six-foot-five Burns has 777 points (227 goals, 550 assists) in 1,251 career NHL games with the Minnesota Wild and Sharks.
The Wild selected Burns 20th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft.
Burns was a forward in his one year of junior with the Brampton Battalion before he switched to defence in the pro ranks.
