Wednesday Wagers: Can Tavares, McDavid, Toffoli extend streaks?

Mike Futa discusses if Connor McDavid will reach 100 points, if the Jets can slow the Oilers in the playoffs and much more.

There are seven games on the NHL schedule Wednesday, including three North Division matchups.

The Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators wrap up their series, the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Montreal Canadiens, and the Edmonton Oilers look to make it six wins in a row against the Winnipeg Jets.

A West Division showdown between the Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche could have a playoff feel, plus 2020 second-overall pick Quinton Byfield is set to make his official NHL debut as the Los Angeles Kings take on the Anaheim Ducks.

For those interested in player stats and the various games within the game, there are also a handful of notable individual point streaks on the line. With that in mind, here are four player prop bets to keep an eye on during Wednesday’s slate of games.

Can Tavares extend eight-game point streak?

John Tavares is on quite the heater with 12 points on his current eight-game streak and the Maple Leafs captain is favoured to extend it to nine in a row against the Canadiens. Tavares recording over 0.5 points is listed at -143, while the odds his point streak ends are a +110 underdog.

Tavares has points in four of six meetings against Montreal this season, including in all three games played at the Bell Centre. Jake Allen is in net for the Canadiens and Carey Price’s crease mate is just 4-6-0 in his past 10. Allen has played better on the road this season, so it’s not entirely surprising oddsmakers have Tavares notching a point as chalk.

Toffoli to score in fifth straight game?

Sticking with the featured Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey matchup, Tyler Toffoli has a goal in each of his past four games. If he can extend that streak to a career-high five games it’ll return +150. Auston Matthews at -133 is the only player in the game with a steeper goal price than Toffoli, who hasn’t ever scored in five consecutive regular-season games. His only other four-game streak happened in 2015 when he was with the Kings.

Montreal is returning home after a five-game Alberta road trip. Toffoli has only scored in two of his past nine games at Bell Centre, however he has notched goals in the first home game following a road trip of at least four games on two of three occasions this season. With Jonathan Drouin away from the team due to personal reasons, there’s added pressure on Toffoli to extend his streak.

Can McDavid extend his goal and multi-point streaks?

It seems automatic these days that Connor McDavid is good for at least two points per night. After all, he has 25 multi-point efforts in 46 games so far this season, and in the past four games alone he has five goals and 12 points.

McDavid has 19 points in eight games against Winnipeg this season, including his four-point performance in Monday’s 6-1 win. In fact, Edmonton has won five straight against Winnipeg and averaged more than 3.8 goals per game against them this season.

McDavid to score over 1.5 points Wednesday pays even money (+100) whereas under 1.5 points is the slight -130 favourite.

Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck can’t have much confidence heading into the game after getting the yank in two of his past three starts – not to mention his .870 save percentage and 4.29 GAA vs. Edmonton this year.

McDavid also has goals in three straight games and his odds to score again Wednesday are the same as his odds to register multiple points, even money. One of the only things the Hart Trophy frontrunner hasn’t managed to accomplish this season has been a four-game goal streak.

Will Stone get stymied by Avs once again?

Another west coast game to monitor is the anticipated seventh meeting between the Golden Knights and Avalanche.

Vegas winger Mark Stone is producing at a 1.15 points per game rate this season yet he has only mustered two assists and five total shots in six games against Colorado this season. Stone has been hot as of late with 11 points and 16 shots on goal in his past seven outings. Stone’s over/under for shots on goal Wednesday is 1.5 at -130. He has two or more shots in four of his past five games. Stone to score his 19th goal of the season is listed at +175. He has found the back of the net six times in the past seven games overall.
