Canada’s women remained unbeaten at the world sitting volleyball championships with a 3-0 victory over Japan (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) on Monday.
Captain Heidi Peters led Canada (3-0) with 29 points (16 attacks, 10 aces and three blocks).
Kerrie Buchberger added 11 points, while Allison Lang contributed eight as Canada controlled the match from the service line and finished with 14 aces.
The Canadian women secured the top spot in their pool with nine points. Canada will next play France (0-3) in the knockout stage on Tuesday.
"Japan was definitely not going to just lay down and take it — they did an incredible job," said Canada’s Julia Chisholm. "But I think our resiliency and communication made it so we could find each other easily on the court and it just made it a great game."
On the men’s side, the Canadians lost to China 3-1 in their final preliminary round match (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19).
Canada (1-2) will next face the United States (2-1) in the knockout stage Tuesday.
“We are looking forward to building into the playoffs and no matter who we have in front of us in the playoffs, its going to be a battle,” said Canada's Bryce Foster. “But we’re ready for it and going to put our best foot forward and keep fighting and find some success here.”
