TESERO, Italy — Norway’s Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo completed his historic gold medal sweep of the men’s cross-country skiing events on Saturday by winning his sixth race and set the record for the most golds by one athlete in a single Winter Olympics.
Klaebo’s victory in the 50-kilometre mass start race shattered the nearly 50-year record set by American speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
"There are a lot of emotions going through your mind when you're doing the last 100 metres," Klaebo told CBC Olympics. "It couldn't be a better way to crown the Olympics with winning the 50K. In Norway, they say if you're going to become a man, you need to win the 50K. Today, we did."
Klaebo had four individual wins and two team wins.
The Norwegian star now has a record 11 career Olympic gold medals.
"I think I'll need some time to let this sink in," Klaebo said. "It's been two crazy weeks. It's been a lot of fun, a lot of emotions. Now we'll need to spend some time back home and try to let everything sink in and start going through everything back again."
Norway leads the way with 18 gold medals and 40 total medals at Milano Cortina 2026.
