The undefeated run through the preliminary round came to end for the Canadian women’s basketball team at the Rio Olympics.
Canada struggled as Kia Nurse scored just three points, her tournament low, in a 81-51 loss to the United States.
The Canadians held their own in the first quarter, going down 18-16 before the Americans took charge in the second quarter. USA outscored Canada 63-35 from that point on.
Canada’s leading scorer was Miranda Ayim with eight points while the U.S. were led by Diana Taurasi (12 points) and Maya Moore (12 points).
It was the first loss for the Canadian women’s team of the preliminary round, as the squad beat China, Serbia, and Senegal earlier in the tournament before falling short on Friday afternoon.
Canada’s next game, their final match-up of the preliminary round, takes place Sunday as they take on Spain at 4:45 p.m. ET.
The quarter-final round of the competition begins next Tuesday.
