Myles Creighton has made history on the Korn Ferry Tour, becoming the first Canadian to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit.
Creighton, of Digby, N.S., shot an 11-under 59 in the third round of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open.
He was 5 under for his first seven holes at Crestview Country Club, which plays as a par 70. He bogeyed the par-3 8th before getting it right back with a birdie on No. 9.
Creighton shot a 6-under 29 on his back nine, including birdies on Nos. 13-16, and one more for good measure on No. 18, chipping in from off the green.
Fellow Canadian Adam Hadwin shot a 59 at The American Express in 2017.
Creighton finished just as the final group was teeing off. He had a two-shot lead as he putted out and remained firmly in the mix through 54 holes as he looks for his first win on the Korn Ferry Tour.
“It's typically very hard to back up a really low round, just with your expectations being so high from the day before. So, try to just limit expectations and just keep the same mindset of not trying to play any different just because now I'm in a good position,” Creighton said.
Taylor Pendrith, who has been pals with Creighton for almost a decade, was asked at the Travelers Championship — after he shot his own tidy Saturday 62 on the PGA Tour — about his friend. He said Creighton’s game is “really solid.”
“Drives it well, hits it long enough. He’s a good putter. He might disagree. I think his game is made for the PGA Tour and hopefully he’ll be out here soon,” Pendrith said.
Creighton’s 59 was the 15th sub-60 round in Korn Ferry Tour history. The lowest is a 13-under 57, which was shot by Cristobal Del Solar of Chile at last year’s Astara Golf Championship.
Somewhat crazily, Creighton’s sub-60 effort wasn’t even the lowest round of the week. Adrien Dumont de Chassart shot his own 59 at Crestview in the first round.
Creighton said Saturday that he has shot a 59 before, but it was at his home club in Nova Scotia, Old Ashburn, and it plays as just a par-67. He also shot a 62 on the now-PGA Tour Americas.
“Never been close really, other than that. Crazy,” he said.
If there was a harbinger of good things to come this week, Creighton made an ace on Friday at Crestview on the par-3 12th en route to shooting a 5-under 30 on his back nine just to make the cut.
“I was trying to get to 3 under to make the putt and all of a sudden, I look at the board and I'm 5 under. Like I didn't feel like it was real,” Creighton said. “I tried to just carry that over to today, played kind of the same way, just tried to have fun and hit shots and make the shot fit your eye.”
Now, Creighton has an eye on the prize Sunday on the Korn Ferry Tour.
