The Montreal Impact have signed midfielder Victor Wanyama from Tottenham on a free transfer, the team announced on Tuesday. No

Wanyama will count as a designated player and put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Montreal.

“I’m really happy to join an exciting club like the Montreal Impact,” said Wanyama. “MLS continues to grow every season and I’m looking forward to bringing further awareness to this team, city and league across Africa.”

The Kenyan admitted that Impact head coach Thierry Henry played a pivotal role in his decision to join the club.

“When I spoke to Thierry and he told me he wanted me to join him in Montreal, I didn’t have to think twice,” Wanyama continued. “He has always been a player that I’ve admired, and I am really happy to get the opportunity to work with him and to play a part that can ensure that the Montreal Impact have an improved season and hopefully reach the ultimate stages of the competitions in which we compete.”

Wanyama, a deep-lying midfielder, made 97 appearances for Spurs in all competitions upon joining the club in 2016. He also had successful spells with Southampton and Celtic before moving to Tottenham.

The 28-year-old has suffered recurring knee injuries in recent years. He missed 47 games for Spurs over the last two and a half seasons.
