ORLANDO, Fla. — Jozy Altidore scored two second-half goals and Toronto FC beat Orlando City 2-0 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.
Toronto (2-4-0), playing in its sixth straight road game, scored the initial goal of a match for the first time this season.
"To break this run of four games and get ourselves into a very positive position going into this last road game is massive," said TFC head coach Greg Vanney. "What we have talked about all along is building momentum as we go home, something for the crowd to get excited about. I think it was a great step in the right direction."
Altidore played a quick free kick near midfield for a give-and-go with Sebastian Giovinco in the 50th minute and Altidore rounded a defender and rolled in a goal off the far post. Altidore added another in the 83rd after getting two Orlando players to bite on a shot fake and he left-footed in his fourth goal of the season.
Giovinco has a goal or an assist on five of the last six Toronto goals. His close-range shot in the 81st minute was defended well by goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
Ricketts made an acrobatic save in the first minute for Orlando (2-4-2) on Jackson’s shot from distance. Toronto’s goalkeeper, Joe Bendik, came out of his area in the seventh minute to challenge Cyle Larin for a through ball, then quickly got to his feet to block Kevin Molino’s rebound attempt.
"The guys worked incredibly hard to work through their assignments over the course of the game," said Vanney. "We had some opportunities out of transition, not a ton of possession tonight but the group was focused on the defending side. This is a great defensive foundation to continue to build from. It was for me a clinical road win."
