– McEwen takes home $22,000 for National title –
– Next Grand Slam of Curling event is the Canadian Open, Dec. 9-14 in Yorkton, SK –
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (November 23, 2014) Following four days of first-rate curling action, Winnipeg’s Team McEwen clinched victory by defeating Team Jacobs in the final of the National – the second event of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season – today at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
After going 3-2 in round robin play earlier this week, Team McEwen grinded its way to a 5-2 win over hometown favourites and Sochi Olympic Winter Games gold medallist Team Jacobs. This is McEwen’s first National title and fourth Grand Slam title. With the win, McEwen also moves into first place in world rankings, while Jacobs falls to No. 2.
“I thought we recovered quick from a few misses that I made. The guys really supported me to give me that chance to mentally come back,” said skip Mike McEwen. “I was pretty proud of the team for how consistent they were and propping me up a little bit for the first half of the game.”
“Unfortunately, we didn’t bring our best effort to the ice today and we didn’t get any breaks, and you lose as a result of that sometimes,” said skip Brad Jacobs. “It was a really fun event for us. We would have loved to win it for the Soo, but we just didn’t have it today.”
As victors, Team McEwen brings home $22,000, while Team Jacobs takes away $13,000 of the $100,000 purse awarded to the eighteen men’s teams competing.
